Potamos Beach lies on the northwestern coast of Gavdos at the mouth of a rugged valley. Its reddish sand and eroded formations make it a destination for landscape-focused visitors as much as swimmers.
Beach Setting & Facilities
The beach is natural and unorganised, with steep ground and distinctive geological features around it. Supplies and shelter should not be assumed available at the shore.
Plan a self-sufficient visit. Bring drinking water, food and sun protection, and take everything away with you. Do not expect toilets, showers, rental equipment or lifeguard cover to be available.
Things to Do at Potamos Beach, Gavdos
Enjoy the changing colours and landforms, then swim only if conditions and access permit. Observe the geology without removing clay or digging into fragile formations.
How to Get There
Use a planned route from the Ambelos area, seeking current advice about the walking approach or any rough tracks. Do not follow a vehicle line on a map without checking where it actually ends.
Check the current ANENDYK ferry timetable and operating notices before planning connections.
Is It Suitable for Families?
This is a remote outing for well-prepared visitors, not a convenient choice for a casual day with toddlers. Access, heat and return logistics should decide whether it suits your group. Do not rely on the beach being quiet as a reason to overlook those requirements.
Where to Stay
Choose a Gavdos base around confirmed ferry plans, your walking ability and the services operating for your dates. Karave, Sarakiniko and Korfos offer different arrival and beach logistics. Remote island shores are easier to enjoy when accommodation, drinking water and local transfers are arranged before you set out.
Practical Tip
Avoid sitting directly below eroding slopes and do not apply unknown local clay to your skin as a presumed treatment. The landscape is best left intact.
