Glyka Nera Beach: Sweet Water Beach between Sfakia and Loutro

Glyka Nera Beach, often called Sweet Water Beach, lies between Chora Sfakion and Loutro. Pebbles, steep mountain slopes and freshwater springs give it a character very different from the sandy resort beaches near Chania.

Beach Setting & Facilities

The sea can feel noticeably cool around the spring-fed shoreline. Seasonal beach services may be available, but the bay remains a remote stop rather than a road-accessible resort.

Expect a modest level of support rather than a full resort setup. Buy drinking water before settling in and confirm any seasonal food or equipment options on arrival.

Things to Do at Glyka Nera Beach

Make swimming the main event and allow time to enjoy the mountain backdrop. A boat-based visit can fit into a stay in Loutro without requiring a demanding return hike.

How to Get There

Arrange a boat transfer from the Sfakia or Loutro area, or use the coastal walking route only if it suits your experience. The paths include exposed, uneven sections and are unsuitable for pushchairs.

Is It Suitable for Families?

Better suited to families already comfortable with boat transfers or uneven coastal walking. Plan the return before arriving and carry your own essentials. For a first outing with very young children, a road-accessible beach is usually simpler to manage.

Where to Stay

Chora Sfakion is a useful road-and-ferry base for this coast. Loutro and Agia Roumeli offer a different, roadless stay where passenger boats and walking access shape the trip. Choose your base by the journey you are happy to repeat, not just the distance shown on a map.

Practical Tip

Carry your own drinking water. The presence of freshwater springs does not establish that untreated water is safe to drink.
