Orthi Ammos Beach lies east of Frangokastello, where pale dunes rise behind a broad sandy shore. Choose it for its open landscape and a less built-up atmosphere than the beach directly below the fortress.
Beach Setting & Facilities
The beach is predominantly sandy, with a gradual entrance in places. The dunes are the defining feature, while the eastern end has a longstanding naturist presence. Shade and beach services are limited.
Plan a self-sufficient visit. Bring drinking water, food and sun protection, and take everything away with you. Do not expect toilets, showers, rental equipment or lifeguard cover to be available.
Things to Do at Orthi Ammos Beach
Walk the shoreline when temperatures are comfortable, then combine your visit with the fortress exterior. Bring a camera for the contrast between the dune ridge, sea and mountains.
How to Get There
Reach Frangokastello by road and continue east. There are approaches from above the dunes and along the coast; use established access paths and allow for a sandy return walk.
Is It Suitable for Families?
Consider the final walk as well as the beach itself. Families need manageable bags, footwear and enough energy for the return. If you need easy pushchair access or dependable shade, inspect the approach before committing to a full day.
Where to Stay
Chora Sfakion is a useful road-and-ferry base for this coast. Loutro and Agia Roumeli offer a different, roadless stay where passenger boats and walking access shape the trip. Choose your base by the journey you are happy to repeat, not just the distance shown on a map.
Practical Tip
Do not scramble over vegetation-covered dunes to shorten the route. Sand can become very hot by midday, so wear footwear.
